Specialist art translations for a high-profile exhibition

The challenge

Bristol Museum & Art Gallery is the South West’s largest museum and art gallery, as well as one of its premier cultural highlights.

A few years ago, it hosted Ahead of the Curve: New China from China – a major international exhibition showcasing contemporary ceramics and glass by 20 Chinese artists, many exhibiting in the UK for the first time.

The project required translating complex Chinese-language exhibition content – spanning fine art theory, ceramic techniques and cultural context – into clear, engaging English for gallery panels and printed materials.

This sat within a wider cultural programme of events and workshops, increasing the importance of accurate, accessible interpretation.

With print production deadlines fixed well ahead of the exhibition launch, there was no room for delay – everything had to be finalised early and delivered right first time.

Our approach

Recommended by the University of Bristol, Media Translation assembled a specialist team of linguists with expertise in fine art and art history -ensuring the subject matter was handled with the depth it required.

We adopted a highly collaborative workflow, with close dialogue between translator and revisor to resolve complex terminology and artistic nuances. This back-and-forth process was critical to refining meaning – particularly around ceramic techniques, stylistic intent and culturally embedded references.

Alongside this, we carried out targeted research to ensure consistency and accuracy across all materials, from exhibition panels to printed catalogues.

Throughout the project, we maintained an open line of communication with the client – asking questions early and often to ensure alignment and eliminate ambiguity before print.

The result

  • All materials delivered on time for advance print production, supporting a seamless exhibition launch
  • Highly specialised content translated into clear, accessible English without losing artistic integrity
  • A consistent visitor experience across exhibition panels and printed materials
  • Strong client feedback, with the lead curator, Kate Newnham, praising our:

“prompt delivery, attention to detail and willingness to ask questions”

Our team was also invited to attend a pre-opening viewing – giving us the opportunity to see the translated materials in situ and experience first-hand how visitors would engage with the exhibition.

The result was more than accurate translation: it was a carefully crafted interpretation that helped bring contemporary Chinese ceramics to life for a new audience. The book to accompany the exhibition is still available for sale in the museum shop.
