The Act’s risk categories, simplified

The Act groups AI systems into four levels – and your translation provider should be able to tell you exactly which category applies to the tools they use:

Banned

Systems that manipulate people or violate rights.

High‑risk

Used in areas like credit scoring, recruitment or medical devices.

Limited‑risk

Most AI‑assisted translation workflows fall here, including LLM‑based drafting.

Minimal‑risk

Systems like classic machine translation, especially when personal data isn’t involved.

What obligations matter for you

For most businesses, the EU AI Act doesn’t introduce abstract theory – it sets a few practical expectations you should be able to rely on when working with a provider.   • It does not treat translation tools as high‑risk.
  • It does not replace human translators.
  • It does not require complex audits for limited‑risk workflows.
